Our kids are back to school for the new school year! On September 9th, all of our primary and secondary school kids began classes. In preparation for the year ahead, supplies, including uniforms, backpacks, school shoes, and books were purchased. These things help ensure our kids have what they need for a successful school year.
As our kids enjoyed a break from school in July and August, preparations for the new school year did not stop. This week, we are sharing about preparations, including summer school and professional development our teachers participated in, along with an update on The Raining Season Primary School and our kids attending Rising Academy.
Summer School
Over the summer, The Raining Season Primary School offered its first-ever summer school session. Twenty-six children from the community and thirty-three children from the center attended the program. This was an incredible opportunity for The Raining Season to serve the community by offering summer school at a very affordable price. The small fee was used to cover extra supplies that were needed. The goal of summer school was to help the children retain the information they learned during the previous school year and also empower them for the new grade level they are beginning this fall. The classes are also helping students who need a little extra support in specific academic areas.
Teacher Professional Development
As our teachers prepared for the new school year, on August 30 and 31, The Raining Season Primary School teachers participated in professional development. During the two-day workshop, they covered topics including creative and innovative teaching methods, a code of ethics for teachers, early childhood education, child protection, child-centered classrooms, enhanced communication with parents and caregivers, and stress management.
The professional development was led by a team from SOS Children’s Villages. This organization works with national and local governments and community-based organizations to empower communities and parents to develop and strengthen educational programs. Our teachers were eager to participate in this professional development as they prepared for the new school year.
We are thankful for an excellent and dependable team of teachers. They have linked arms with us for many years. They provide a quality education that prepares our young children to move on to secondary school and beyond. We know how important an excellent education is in impacting our children's and the children of the surrounding community's future success. Over the past year, our team has worked to ensure our school will grow to be one of the top-performing schools in Sierra Leone.
The Raining Season Primary School
For the third year, The Raining Season has been able to open its school to the surrounding community! We have been so fortunate to have a school onsite that so many of our children have attended. Because of a limited need and low enrollment of children from The Covering, there is room to serve the community at an affordable price. Our enrollment is up slightly from last year. Last year, we served one hundred thirty-three children. We are excited to share that this year, our school is serving thirty-one TRS kids and one hundred five children from the community, totaling one hundred thirty-six children! Classes began on September 9th, and enrollment continued to grow through the week. The kids and teachers are looking forward to a great school year.
Rising Academy
This year, we have thirty-two children attending school outside the center at Rising Academy. They returned to classes excited for the new school year and excited to see their friends from school. We are grateful that our children are able to receive an excellent education close to our center. Rising Academy's commitment to providing quality education is equipping young students with the tools they need to thrive.
We know how important an excellent education is in impacting our children's future success. Education is a stepping stone in helping our kids achieve their dreams of becoming accountants, nurses, logistics officers, and teachers or pursuing other jobs and trades. Join us in praying for our teachers and children as they begin a new school year.
Many blessings,
The Raining Season
