February Update

This week, we have a couple of quick updates from Sierra Leone to share with you, including the unfortunate news of a staff member passing away, the January birthday celebration, and an update on our young adults starting University. All our kids have been busy settling back into their school routine as the new term began in January. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!

WILFRED KARGBO

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of a beloved TRS staff member, Wilfred Kargbo. Wilfred passed away on January 22nd after a brief illness. Wilfred was part of the TRS security staff, joining us in November 2016. Our in-country Director, Sorie Kamara, shared this about Uncle Wilfred, “He was very dedicated to his work during his time of service. We will all miss uncle Wilo, as he is funnily called. May God continue to console his family and all of us at this difficult time.”

Please keep the staff, kids, and his family in your prayers as they go through this difficult time. We are grateful for everything he did for TRS.

UNIVERSITY UPDATE

After a holiday break, school is back in session for all of our students. All eight young adults who passed their West Africa Senior School Certificate Exam last year have officially begun University classes, too. Six young adults joined Mary at Milton Margai University and started taking lectures in December, while the final two who are attending The Institute of Public Administration and Management began classes in January. They are all adjusting well and enjoying their time. It is hard work, and they are keeping busy studying and completing assignments.

JANUARY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

On January 28th, our monthly birthday celebration was held. Our kids and staff had the opportunity to celebrate our kids with January birthdays. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue holding monthly birthday celebrations in 2023. Our kids really look forward to it! On the final Saturday of each month, all of our kids gather to celebrate the birthdays from that month. Auntie Marie and the girls at the Roots House make a cake and prepare food, and the celebrants enjoy a meal, soda, and cake. They love being celebrated by their friends and enjoy the special treats that come with the birthday celebrations.
