Discover Sierra Leone: Celebrating Sierra Leone’s Independence Day

Every year on April 27th, the people of Sierra Leone celebrate Independence Day. This important day marks the moment in 1961 when Sierra Leone became free from British colonial rule and began its journey as an independent nation.  This year marks 65 years of independence!

Independence Day is a time to reflect on the strength, resilience, and beauty of Sierra Leone and its people. It is also a day to honor those who worked hard for freedom and national unity.

Uncle Osseh shared that Independence Day used to be a much bigger celebration in years past, with large public gatherings and widespread festivities. While the celebrations may not be as large today, it is still an important national holiday.

Schools close for the day, and the government organizes special programs to recognize individuals for their service and achievements. It remains a meaningful time for the country to come together and celebrate its history and progress.

At The Raining Season, we join in celebrating Sierra Leone’s rich culture, history, and future. We are grateful to serve alongside communities in Sierra Leone and to witness the kindness, courage, and joy that shine so brightly there.

Happy Independence Day, Sierra Leone!

Many blessings,

The Raining Season
