Discover Sierra Leone: National School for the Deaf

The National School for the Deaf is located in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and provides a place for deaf or hard of hearing students to learn, grow, and develop the skills they need to navigate the world around them.

For The Raining Season, this school holds a special place in our hearts because one of the children at The Covering, Moses, has attended the school since 2017. During his time there, he has learned communication skills through sign language, lip reading, and written language.

The National School for the Deaf offers students an education in an environment designed around their communication and learning needs. Students develop academic skills while also learning ways to communicate and interact with others. Education for children with disabilities is especially important in Sierra Leone, where access to specialized educational opportunities can be limited. Schools like the National School for the Deaf help provide children with the skills and support they need to grow in confidence, pursue their interests, and become more independent.

The school also plays an important role in raising awareness and understanding of deafness. By giving children opportunities to learn alongside others with similar experiences, the school helps students develop skills that benefit them both inside and outside the classroom.

During our June team trip to Sierra Leone, the team had the opportunity to visit the school on the Day of the African Child. They brought supplies for the school and learned more about the students and teachers who are part of this important community. Visiting on the Day of the African Child was a reminder to recognize the importance of making education accessible to every child, not just at The Raining Season but throughout Sierra Leone.

The National School for the Deaf is one of many schools and organizations working to give children in Sierra Leone opportunities to learn, develop important skills, and prepare for their futures. We are grateful for the impact it has had on Moses’ life.
