A Day in the Life at The Covering

Every child deserves a safe place to call home, three meals a day, and someone to believe in them. At The Raining Season, this vision comes to life each day thanks to sponsorship and your support. Today, we invite you to walk in the shoes of one of our children.  While each child’s journey is unique, today we are looking at a typical day for Ernest.  Ernest and his sister Esther came to The Covering in 2019.

Mornings begin early at The Raining Season. Ernest and the other children begin to wake as the sun rises. Before school, they eat breakfast, do chores in their apartment, and get ready for the day. Ernest works very hard to complete his chores and help his aunties. He is quiet but very kind and hardworking.

Once the children are ready for the day, it is time for school. Ernest attends The Raining Season Preparatory School with children from TRS and the community. He is in Grade Six. He joins his classmates as their teacher instructs them in math and reading. Ernest and his classmates just completed their National Primary School Examination to determine if they will qualify for Junior Secondary School in the fall. At school, the children dream of one day becoming accountants, teachers, logistics officers, and more.

When school ends for the day, the children from the community return to their homes.  Then, the children at The Covering have quiet time to rest.  Many of the older children, like Ernest, spend this time studying.  As Ernest prepared to take the National Primary School Examination, he spent a lot of extra time studying.  When rest time has ended, the children have free time to play.  Many of the boys enjoy playing soccer outside.  As it moves closer to the rainy season, Ernest and all of the children will begin spending more time indoors.  Inside is the perfect place for Ernest to play Uno with his friends, to read, study, and draw.  He really enjoys drawing!

As the day winds down, it is time for evening devotions.  Often, everyone will gather together outside to sing and complete a devotion together.  Sometimes, Pastor William will lead the devotion, and other times, the children will take turns leading the devotion.  If devotions are not held all together outside, the children have devotion time in their apartments with their aunties.  When devotions are complete, it is time to begin getting ready for bed.  Ernest shares a room in his apartment with other boys his age.

Ernest’s day might seem simple, but this kind of stability is extraordinary for children who may have once known hunger, fear, or abandonment. It is transformation in motion.   At The Raining Season, children like Ernest are safe, known, and loved.  They have a safe place to live, opportunity through education, nutritious food, essential medical care, and spiritual nurturing every day.  Thanks to your prayers, generosity, and sponsorship, children at The Covering are not just surviving—they are thriving.

Many blessings,

The Raining Season
