June Team Shares Letters and Devotional Books

When The Raining Season’s June team traveled to Sierra Leone, each school-age child at The Covering received the special gift of a devotional book and a personalized letter written just for them.

The project was organized by June team leader Lisa Rippy, who wanted every child to know they are seen, loved, and prayed for by people they have never even met. As Lisa began packing for her trip, she came across two devotional books she had previously purchased for girls at The Covering. That simple discovery sparked an idea. She knew she needed to bring a devotional book for every girl, which turned into getting one for every boy, too!

Just two days before leaving for Freetown, Lisa brought a photo of every school-age child to her Bible study and asked if the women would write a short note of encouragement to a child. The response was an enthusiastic yes! With more than forty children, she also invited neighbors and family members to join the project, and together they made sure every child received a handwritten letter created especially for them.

Imagine opening an envelope to find someone across the world knows your name, has seen your picture, has taken time to write to you, and wants you to know that you matter. That is exactly what happened. The children were thrilled to receive both their new devotional books and their personal letters. But the story didn’t end there. Lisa included a blank thank-you note, giving every child the opportunity to write a letter back. Over the following days, the children carefully wrote their responses. When Lisa returned home, she carried those letters back to the people who had encouraged them.

Many of the people who wrote these notes had never met the children. Some were friends from Lisa’s Bible study, others were neighbors or family members. Yet through a few handwritten words, they reminded each child that there are people around the world praying for them and cheering them on.

We are so grateful to Lisa and everyone who participated in this special project. Thank you for reminding our children that God’s love reaches across every border. The letters and devotional books will continue to bless the children in the months to come.

Many blessings,

The Raining Season
